First a sad note.  Two firefighters were lost this week fighting the California Wildfires.  Both were from
Washington State.  Fire Chief Dan Packer, from East Pierce Fire and Rescue (Bonnie Lake, WA), was
killed when he was overrun on the Panther Fire.  Firefighter Andrew Palmer, 18, was struck and killed
by a tree while on the Eagle Fire.  He was on the Olympic National Park Fire Crew.  Contact
information is listed below.  The crew from the Cle Elum Ranger District sends their thoughts and
prayers to the families.

Reader's Report by Kathlee Dunham
Hi There,
Just wanted to report in about
another fabulous ride some friends
and I had in the Alpine Lakes
Wilderness.  Sunday morning
(October 12th) we headed out on
our horses from the Pete Lake trail
head to Pete Lake then south on
the PCT.  We rode up past the turn
off to the Spectacle Lake trail and up the switchbacks to the top where
we had amazing views looking down on Spectacle Lake and up at the
surrounding peaks.  There was a light dusting of snow on the trail and
the weather was brisk and beautiful.
The forest service did a great job removing the debris of the avalanche
across the PCT just south of the turn off to Pete Lake.  The trail looked
in wonderful condition with no new blow downs.
In Memory of Kristine Fairbanks
USFS Law Enforcement Officer, Kris
Fairbanks, was lost her life on September
20th, 2008, when she was gunned down
while on duty.  The Cle Elum Trail's Crew
extends their sympathy and prayers to
Kris' family, friends, and co-workers.
Kris is survived by her husband, daughter, and partner, "Radar".
