Stafford Creek Trail # 1359
Rating: Moderate
Open to hikers, horseback, bicycle
Length: 5.6 miles
Low Elevation: 3,120’ High Elevation: 6,000’ Gain:
2,880’
Trailhead Access: Take State Route 970 to the
Teanaway Road and follow it to the North Fork
Teanaway to the end of the pavement. Take a right
on FS Road 9737 for approximately 2 miles and
then take another right on FS Road 9703 (Stafford
Creek) and follow it approximately 3 miles to
trailhead.
Setting: Creek valley, forest, meadow, ridgetop,
subalpine.
Parking and Facilities: A parking area and toilet
are available with dispersed campsites near.
Description: From the road, the trail goes uphill
through forest along the right bank of Stafford Creek
and is moderately steep. At the 3 mile point, it turns
west with the valley and climbs up through
meadows and scattered tress below Navaho Peak.
Just past a large meadow, there is a junction with
Standup Trail #1369. From there the trail takes a
right and switchbacks uphill through rocky areas
with sparse trees. It then crosses a large bare
rocky area and switchbacks a couple more times
through trees and meadows before reaching the
ridgetop and the junction with County Line Trail
#1226.1. The view from here is spectacular,
especially the view of the Stuart Range. The trail
continues down to Ingalls Creek as trail 1217 on
the Leavenworth Ranger District. Please obey all
Wilderness regulations. Water may be sparse later
in the season on the upper portion of the trail.
Rider Notes: This area is rated Extremely Difficult due to narrow, rocky shale tread, cliff traverses, and steep off-camber terrain. It is also a popular horseback area, so user-groups, especially motorcycles and mountain bikes, should ride with caution.
